Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme (The Scheme)

The Schemes contain all the rules of eligibility for compensation, the descriptions of injury and levels of compensation and the procedures for dealing with applications. The 1996 and 2001 Schemes deal with the procedure for appealing against a review decision of the Authority. From 3 November the procedure for appeals is set out in the First tier Tribunal (Social Entitlement Chamber) rules 2008.

The 2008 Scheme applies to applications for compensation made to the Authority on or after 3 November 2008.

The 2001 Scheme applies to applications for compensation made to the Authority between 1 April 2001 and 31 October 2008.

The 1996 Scheme applies to applications for compensation made to the Authority between 1 April 1996 and 31 March 2001.

Guides to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme

The supporting guides for each Scheme are prepared and published by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority. The guides are not binding on the Tribunal.

The guides provide advice on:

  1. The main rules of the scheme.
  2. How and when to apply.
  3. How the Authority deals with your application.
  4. Descriptions of injury and levels of compensation.
